ELECTION BOOTH STAFFING

To tlie Editor of “ The Timaru Herald ” Sir—Now that all the excitement of election is over, allow me to pass a few comments on our polling booths. Surely the unemployed have first preference to working as assistants in the polling booths than men in permanent work. One case in particular, a man on the clerical staff of our Borough Council on annual leave, gets preference to an unfortunate fellowman on the unemployed. Why could our local Unemployment Board not have picked men with average intelligence on relief work and give them the opportunity of earning a few extra shillings. I am, LIVE AND LET LIVE. Timaru, December 5. *
