WEDDING WILLOUGHBY—MUMMERY St. Mary’s Church, Timaru, was tastefully decorated by friends of the bride in shades of lemon, white and green, for the marriage of Katherine Edna, only child of Mrs Mummery and the late Mr Mummery, Christchurch, and Vernon Talbot, yoilpger son of Mr and Mrs J. A. Willoughby, of Geraldine. Canon J. F. Coursey, of St. Mary’s, Geraldine, performed the ceremony, and Mr A. W. V. Vine presided at the organ. The bride, escorted by Mr W. Giles, of Tinwald, wore a model gown of ivory batice beaute. the cowl neckline draped in triple folds to the pointed waistline and the closely moulded skirt falling into a graceful train. The waterfall sleeves of angel skin lace fell to a Van Dyke point at the wrist. Her embroidered tulle veil was set back on the head, and held in place by a coronet or orange blossom. She carried a sheaf bouquet of Arum lilies. Miss Ivy Willoughby (sister of the bridegroom), and Miss Joy Rendall, attended as bridesmaids. Miss Willoughby wore lawn green patterned georgette, daintily shirred at the shoulders and the sides of the closefitting bodice. She wore a wide-brim-med green Leghorn straw hat. Miss Rendall wore a contrasting frock of lemon flowered organdie, the puff sleeves being edged with a dainty frill. The skirt was moulded to the figure, frills falling from the waistline, affording a waterfall effect. Her hat was a wide-brimmed lemon Leghorn straw. They carried bouquets of abutilon and roses in the bridal shades. Little Betty Hutcheon made a dainty flower-girl, dressed in a Kate Greenaway frock of pale pink floral voile. She carried a basket of contrasting sweet peas. Mr H. Matherson acted as best man, and Mr W. Willoughby was groomsman. On leaving the church, the bride was presented with a horseshoe by little Shirley Hutcheon. The reception was held at the Bay tea rooms, which was prettily decorated with the same colourings of lemon green and white. The guests were received by Mrs Rendall and Mrs J. A. Willoughby, the former wearing a black velvet and lace frock and a large black hat relieved with touches of white. She carried a bouquet of red roses. Mrs Willoughby wore a flowered ensemble in tones of brown and gold with hat to match, and carried a bouquet of gold abutilon. When Mr and Mrs V. T. Willoughby left on their honeymoon, the bride was wearing a blue and gold patterned frock relieved at the wrists and throat with knife pleating, over which she wore a tailored coat of assam silk in fawn and a pedal straw hat to tone.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE There was a good attendance at the December meeting of the Geraldine Women’s Institute on Tuesday, which took the form of a Christmas party conducted by the young members. A motion of sympathy was passed to Mrs G. E. Allison in the death of her brother. - An invitation from the Rangitata Institute to its Christmas party was accepted. Correspondence was dealt with, and the young members then took charge, Miss M. S. Kennedy taking the chair. Pianoforte duets were given by Misses D. Paterson and M. Willis, and vocal solos by Miss A. Williamson. A short play, “In the Park," which was presented by the Geraldine Good Companions, was very much enjoyed. Folk dances by the Women’s Institute team and various games and competitions made a most enjoyable evening. A musical knowledge competition was won by Miss Mary Knibb, and a memory test by Miss Frances Williamson. Miss M. S. Kennedy was the winner of the Christmas cake competition The president (Miss M. Cruickshank) thanked the young people for their very entertaining evening, and wished all a very Merry Christmas. Competitions resulted: Christmas novelty from one yard of organdie, Mrs W. Watson 1, Mrs H. J. Alley 2, Miss W Williams 3. Cream puffs, Miss D. Maister 1, Mrs C. Stock 2, Mrs W. H. Mitchelmore 3. PROFICIENCY EXAMINATION The annual proficiency examination was held yesterday at the Primary Department of the Geraldine District High School. Candidates attended from the local school and from the schools in the Geraldine district. Several pupils sat for the Junior National Scholarship examination. CRICKET A friendly match was played between a team representing the Geraldine Cricket Club and the Woodbury Cricket Club. Batting first, Geraldine compiled 47 (A. Vincent 12, C. S. Davies 12, K. Wailach not out 9). McNicholl and Weaver were the most successful bowlers, each securing three wickets. Woodbury made 62 (A. D. Sharpe 17, S. Cooling 16, J. Weaver 15). C. S. Davies took four wickets. Vial three and B. Glen two. In the second innings, Woodbury were all out for 59 (A. D. Sharpe 43, S. Neutze 12). McCullough and Glen each secured three wickets. Geraldine had made 73 for the loss of six wickets when time was called (B. Glen 31, W. J. Rule 22, G. Vial 11). Bowling for Woodbury, H. Cooling secured four wickets and S. Cooling and J. Weaver one each, It is hoped to play a return match before Christmas.
