SUGAR SUPPLIES

AUSTRALIAN AGREEMENT RENEWED United Press Association—By Electrlo Teleerapb—Copvrlebt (Received December 4, 11.15 p.m.) CANBERRA, December 4. The House of Representatives passed a Bill renewing the sugar agreement between the Commonwealth and Queensland Governments. The agreement has a tenure of five years. Mr J. Beasley (Labour) directed attention to the “huge profits" of the Colonial Sugar Refining Company and asked for the appointment of a Select Committee to inquire into the agreement. Mr Fairbairn, of Victoria, sought a reduction in the price of sugar by £4/7/6 a ton. Mr Prowse, of West Australia, urged that the embargo on the importation of sugar should be replaced by a reasonable duty. Mr Fairbairn later claimed that the real method of bringing about a reduction in the price of local sugar appeared to be to reduce the quantity exported at ruinous prices. Mr Beasley’s request for a Select Committee was not granted.
