FAIRLIE

DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL A meeting of the Committee of the Fairlie District High School was held on Monday, when Mr H. Carlton, chairman, presided. Before commencing business, the chairman referred to the result of the recent election, and moved that Mr D. Barnes, M.P., be written to and congratulated on his election. This was carried unanimously. The Education Board wrote in regard to first aid equipment for the school. It was decided that equipment as recommended be purchased. Mr Hayman, headmaster, reported as follows:—The total roll number is 213, and the average attendance 198.3. During the month the school has been visited by Dr. Baker McLaglan, who carried out a thorough medical inspection, and recommended four children for the Geraldine Health Camp, and also by Mr G. S. Ridley, Inspector of Agriculture, who approved the new lay-out of the gardens, and announced that the entries in the Calf Club competition were to be judged on December 10. In this connection a small trophy for the winning entry from the Committee would be most acceptable. Arising out of the report Mr Shanks proposed, and Mr Goodwin seconded, that from February 3, 1936, school will open at 8 a.m., the luncheon hour to be 12 noon to 1.15 p.m., school to close at 3.15 p.m. This change to apply to first term only.—Carried. The increase in the average attendance was favourably commented on, and Mr Hayman and his staff were congratulated on again instituting the attendance banner competition. Messrs H. Shanks and P. O'Connor were appointed visitors for December. Mr Goodwin, visitor for the month, reported on a number of minor matters requiring attention. It was decided that application be made to the Education Board for a grant of £lO towards repairing the asphalt at the school. It was decided to hold the school sports as usual, and to donate the sum of £2 for prizes.
