Protein and Sterility In the last issue of the Journal of Science and Technology an article is published on Dietary Protein in Relation to Sterility, written by Messrs I. J. Cunningham, M.Sc., Ph. D., and C. S. M. Hopkirk, D. V.Sc., of the Wallaccville Veterinary Laboratory, the article being a report on the work done by these officers at Wallaceville. After their introduction the authors say: “We wish in this paper to report our findings that sterility of the male can be caused by two modifications of the protein content of the diet—one, by feeding protein in excess; two, by the feeding of protein biologically poor.” In the summary of their work the authors say: “No reason is yet advanced for the effect of high protein feeding. Attention is drawn, however, to the bull sterility which occurs in the Taranaki and Waikato districts, where the protein contents of the dairying pastures are very high. On analogy with the results obtained in rats it is suggested that the narrow nutritive ratio of the pastures might be the reason for the bull sterility.”
