Value of Advertising The value of advertising lost articles is shown by the prompt response by finders. Several weeks ago a wristlet watch was lost in the Geraldine Domain. The loser advertised, and two days later the watch was returned to the Geraldine office of “The Timaru Herald” by registered mail from Timaru. On another ocasion last week a horse cover was lost and the finder promptly returned it to the advertiser. On Thursday afternoon, a gold brooch, comprising a miniature British Columbian dollar and two half-dollars, which had been lost at the Timaru A. and P. Show, was returned in response to an advertisement in the “Herald.”

Motor-Cyclist Hurt A motor-cyclist, Clarence Shears, aged 21, an engineer’s apprentice, suffered injuries to his collarbone and a severe cut bn the leg, which necessitated the insertion of stitches, in a collision with a motor-car at the intersection of Gibson and North Streets at 1 p.m. yesterday. The motor-cyclist was proceeding down North Street and the car. which was driven by Mr George Cecil Ellis, farmer, Kingsdown, travelling up North Street. The collision occurred as the car was turning into Gibson Street, the motorcyclist being thrown off on his shoulder. The headlamp of the motorcycle was smashed in and the front mudguard bent, but no damage was done to the car.

Prosperous Sugar Centre The expenditure of approximately £50,000 on harbour improvements at Timaru pales into insignificance when compared with what is being done at Mackay, Queensland, where a new port is being constructed at a cost of £1,000,000. According to details contained in a letter written by Mr W. Thoming to his uncle, Mr John Cross (Temuka) contractors have already been engaged on the huge work for about 12 months and so far about £170,000 has been spent. Mackay is the centre of the sugar industry in Queensland and its annual output is about 118,00 ft tons. The new port, which was designed by Mr G. A. Lee (Auckland) who reported on the proposed improvements to Timaru harbour some time ago, is 3J miles from the city. Some idea of the prosperity of Mackay may be had from the fact that works under construction, apart from the harbour, are: Sewerage scheme £130,000; drainage works, £10,000; new school, £22,000; new Court, Police Station, barracks and gaol, £25,000; new bridges, £70,000, and ££5,000.
