REV. CLYDE CARR AT PAREORA

At a meeting held in the Pareora Hall last night, the Rev. Clyde Carr, Labour candidate for Timaru, addressed a gathering of between 50 and 60 people, and in his speech illustrated our independence of world conditions, emphasising that New Zealand could withstand an indefinite siege or blockade probably better than any other country. He urged the necessity, however, for a balanced economy by developing the secondary Industries and thus absorbing the growing population. On the motion of Mr T. Vincent, seconded by Mr R. Whitticase Mr Carr was accorded a vote of thanks, while a motion thanking him for past services to the electorate, moved by Mr W. J. Morgan, was carried by acclamation. The meeting was presided over by Mr A. G. Pratt. WAITAKI Yesterday Mr David Barnes, of Fairlie farmer, was nominated as Labour candidate for the Waitaki electorate, his nominators being: Alexander Finlay Campbell, of Fairlie, farmer; Peter Edward Nelson, of Fairlie, contractor, John Francis Fox, of Studholme, farmer; Jeffery Allan Lash, of Waimate, garage proprietor; Richard Eddy, of Waimate, agent; George Barclay, of Waihaorunga, farmer; Forbes Thomson Wallace, of Redcliff* farmer. TEMUKA That greater interest is being taken in the forthcoming election is apparent by the large meetings now being addressed by Mr T. D. Burnett, the National Government candidate tor Temuka. On Thursday night Mr Burnett spoke to two largely attended meetings, one at Upper Waitohi and the other at Lower Waitohi, and at both places he received a most attentive hearing. At the first meeting Mr A Watson presided. In moving a vote of thanks Mr Wame Pearse made complimentary references to the work Mr Burnett had done on behalf of the district. At Lower Waitohi the chair was taken by Mr A. J. Davey. On the motion of Mr W. Moore, seconded by Mr Geo. Gould, Mr Burnett received a vote of thanks. In speaking to the motion Mr Moore said he was completely surprised at the length, fulness, and detail of Mr Burnett’s speech. He said he expected to hear a brief hairhour’s talk and was amazed to find Mr Burnett giving an address equal to any delivered in the main centres, and containing a complete record of what the Government had done during the national crisis and its successful efforts in legislating to keep the farmer on the land. Mr Moore mentioned that had such efforts not been made he would probably not have voted for the Government, but seeing what had been done it was up to him and other farmers to support the Government, The Hon. Adam Hamilton, Post-master-General and Minister of Labour, will deliver a political address at Pleasant Point on Tuesday next. He will also speak at Temuka on Wednesday night. The Leader of the Oppoistion, Mr M. J Savage, will address electors in the Theatre Royal on Tuesday next, at 8 p.m. WAIPAWA By Telegraph—Press Association WAIPUKURAU, November 8 Mr H. kt. Christie, the Labour candidate for Waipawa, was given an attentive hearing by a large audience when he outlined the party’s policy, including State control of the Reserve Bank and the stabilisation of prices. The speaker was accorded a vote of thanks. MR HISLOP AT HAMILTON By Telegraph—Press Association HAMILTON, November 8 Devoting most of his speech to replies to recent criticism by Government leaders, Mr T. C. A. Hislop addressed a packed house at the Theatre Royal last evening. He assailed the Government’s charge of touting for votes levelled at the Democrats, when in the last few weeks the Government had restored H per cent, of the Civil Service “cuts,” promised public works, free libraries, free milk, and reduced the unemployment taxation. After its record the Government might well express horror at borrowing, but Democrat borrowing would be designed at aiding self-supporting works. A vote of thanks and confidence was declared carried.
