TIMARU SOCIETY The committee of the Timaru Horticultural Society met last night. Present—Messrs G. E. Knowles (chairman), D. B. Shand (president), Mesdames G. E. Knowles, W. J. Rooney, I. Segar, R. D. King, Messrs J. Stewart, W. J. Foote, J. Moody, C. E. Graham, J. Milligan, J. W. Hinchey, W. J. Hogg, and L. B. Pearson. It was reported that a number of entries had been received for the cottage garden competition, and it was hoped to secure 20 gardens before the closing date. Messrs Shand, Knowles and the secretary (Mr F. J. Cook) were appointed an emergency committee. As a result of a conference with members of the Canterbury Education Board, it was decided that, to endeavour to carry out as near as possible the intention of the donor of the shield, the Society recommend to the Board that the following conditions should govern the Hurdley Shield competition: (1) All schools in the South Canterbury district to be eligible; (2) the Education Board to select the schools considered of sufficient merit for inclusion in the competition; (3) judging to take place in sufficient time to allow the presentation of the Shield by the Society before the end of the school year; (4) the Board to appoint the judge or judges; (5) points for Hurdley Shield as follows: 20 points for general effect of the arrangement of the garden, 20 points for the preparation of the soil and general treatment, 15 points for neatness and general care, 15 points for (a) flowers and ornamental plants, 15 points for (b> vegetables and economic plants, 5 points for naming of plants, 10 points for didry of work done, diary to be handed to judges when visiting schools; (6) the school declared the winner shall have possession of the Shield until December 1 of the following year, when it shall return it to the Society in good order.
