EARLY RESIDENT PASSES MR A. COLES By the death of Mr Arthur Coles on Wednesday, aged 01, Geraldine lost one of Its earliest residents. Mr Coles had not taken part In public affairs, but he was one of the most widely respected residents of the district. Mr Coles wan bom In Oxfordshire on November 10, 1844, and migrated to New Zealand In August, 1874. He settled In Geraldine, and purchased a property In Healey Street, where he built his home. Mr Coles was at first engaged on construction work on the railway between Ashburton and Timaru, and later he contracted for fences and roadmaking. Subsequently he purchased a chaff-cutter with which he worked throughout the district. He then became established as a seed merchant and grain buyer in Geraldine, retiring from business about 11 years a'go. A staunch member of St. Mary’s Anglican Church, he acted as a stipend collector for some years. Mr Coles, who was twice married, is survived by a daughter, Mrs Booker, of Christchurch, and a son, Mr W. A. Coles, of Geraldine. The interment, which was of a private nature, took place at the Geraldine Cemetery yesterday, the Rev. Canon J. F. Coursey officiating. RANGITATA RIFLE CLUB A successful “wind-up” dance was conducted by the Rangitata Miniature Rifle Club in the Soldiers’ Memorial Hall, members of the Geraldine, Peel Forest, Arundel and Orari Bridge Clubs being present. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss J. Shaw and Mr E. Wright, and a "traffic cop” waltz by Miss K. Collins (Geraldine) and Mr K. Palmer. Miss A. Airay and Mr W. Metcalf were the winners of a “first on floor” dance and a cake competition was won by Mr D. Blissett (Geraldine). The club captain (Mr G. I. Cain), extended a welcome to those present, and asked the vice-president (Mr A. Mahan), to present the trophies. Mr Mahan paid a tribute to the good work of the secretary (Mr W. Metcalf), and congratulated Mr G. Cain on winning the two shields and Mr E. Moss on winning the cup. He thanked the donors of trophies. Metcalf’s trophy for non-winners). WOLF CUB PACK The District Scoutmaster (Mr E. Manthorp), acompanied by an assistant Scouter and Cubs from Timaru paid a visit to the Geraldine Wolf Cub Pack at the Parish Hall. After inspecting the troop, they gave instruction in jungle lore and jungle games Under Wolf Cub Mistress (Miss L. Hawke), the pack extended a welcome with the “Grand Howl.” Afternoon tea was provided by the parents of the Cubs. Mr H. A. Robertson thanked the District Scoutmaster for his visit, and senior Sixer Anthony Graybum, called for cheers from the Pack. “THE LIVES OF A BENGAL LANCER ” Paramount’s dramatic spectacle, “The Lives of a Bengal Lancer,” will be screened at the Municipal Theatre at 2.15 p.m. to-day, and finally to-night at 8 o’clock. “The Age,” Melbourne, said that it “must be ranked in a class of its own. The production ranks as one of the finest ever to leave a motion picture studio.” Gary Cooper, Franchot Tone, Richard Cromwell, and Sir Guy Standing head the cast as officers. The drama arises from the conflict between Sir Guy Standing, who plays a crusty, hard-shelled colonel, and his subordinates. A dance in aid of hall funds will be held in the Orari Coronation Hall on Thursday, November 21. Procters, the Premier Opticians, Christchurch, will be making their next professional visit to Geraldine, on Wednesday, December 18, when they may be consulted on all defects of eyesight at the Crown Hotel.
