SOUTH CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB

MEETING OF COMMITTEE At a meeting of the committee of the South Canterbury Jockey Club on Thursday night, there were present Messrs D. Grant (president). D. Marshall, J. E. P. Cameron, T. R. Rhodes, H. H. Fisher and T. Seaton. The Washdyke School Committee was granted the use of the luncheon room for a tug-of-war, on condition that it made good any damage to the buildings or ground. Correspondence was received from the Racing Conference in regard to brush hurdle races, advising that any club desiring to run such events must make application, through the District Committee, to the Conference; and notifying that it was not the intention to grant permission to hold such races all the year round. A circular from the Conference notified that, in terms of the Finance Act, the stakes tax had been reduced from 4 per cent, to 1 per cent., and that a rebate of 21 per cent, had been granted on the totalisator duty up to the first £20,000 put through the machine, with a maximum of £SOO in any one year. A statement of receipts and expenditure covering the October meeting, showing a small profit, was received and adopted. A letter was received from the Conference in connection with the first aid and ambulance facilities at the racecourse. The club’s medical officer, Dr. G. H. Ussher, recommended that a light van should be provided to convey stretcher cases to the ambulance building, and the recommendation was adopted. A deputation from the Timaru Trotting Club waited on the committee to discuss the question of erecting additional horse boxes on the course, and stated that the Trotting Club was prepared to provide 50 per cent, of the cost up to 38 boxes. After an inspection of the proposed site it was agreed that 25 boxes be erected, on a 50-50 basis, provided the price is satisfactory.
