Fair, Douglas Street, left yesterday for Christchurch for the races.

Mr and Mrs Herbert El worthy, “Craigmore.” will leave to-morrow for Christchurch for Cup week. Mrs J. Page. Mt. Gerald, has returned home after a short visit to Mrs A. Fleming, Selwyn Street. Mrs J. S. Satterthwaite. Nile Street, lef yesterday to stay with Mrs Clive Crozier, Christchurch, for the races. Mr and Mrs J. Wesley Hayes, “Centrewood,” Waimate, will be visitors to Christchurch for race week. Miss Kathleen Robinson will arrive from Dunedin to-day on a visit to her mother, Mrs Gladstone Robinson. “Oakwood.” Mr and Mrs James Grant, “Grays Hills,” Mackenzie Country, arrived yesterday on a short visit to Mrs A. Grant, “Aigantighe,” Wai-iti Road. Mrs C. W. Wood. Beverley Road, will leave to-day for Christchurch for Cup week festivities. Miss Harris who w r as her guest has returned to Hastings. Mr and Mrs Maurice Harper and Miss Betty Harper, Waitawa. were visitors to Ashburton yesterday for the show.

Mrs Harold Elworthy, “Craigmore,' w r ho is staying with Mrs Basil Unwin, Church Street, will return home today.

Mrs Hosking, Tinline Downs, Waiau, has returned home after a visit to her father, Mr Razell Wood, Morgan’s Road. Miss Sheila Howell, Cave, who has been spending some months in England and Ireland will return home next week. Mr and Mrs James Macaulay and Miss Elsie Macaulay, Orbell Street, left yesterday for Christchurch. Miss Macaulay will be the guest of Mrs 3. G. Hargreaves.

On Wednesday evening the North End Ratepayers and Improvement Association held a card evening in the Caroline Bay Hall in aid of the Association’s fund for improvement in its area. In spite of the inclement weather a fair number of players spent an enjoyable evening.

Mr Albert Wetjen, a well-known writer of novels and sea stories, and Mrs Wetjen, who are on a visit to New Zealand, intend seeing as much of this country as possible during their stay. Mr Wetjen is collect ‘ig material for short stories and a book, and Mrs Wetjen acts as his secretary.
