In the afternoon, however, a complete change occurred and, accompanied by a cold south-easterly, heavy rain fell at intervals far into the night. Two points of rain were recorded for the 24 hours ended at 9 a.m. yesterday. Geraldine—Air temperatures, min. 33, max. 73, at 9 a.m. 64. Frost, 1 degree. Rainfall, 19 points. General conditions: Bright in morning, dull and overcast during afternoon, with rain later. Temuka—A cold southerly wind prevailed yesterday. There was a frost of three degrees in the morning, and the temperature did not rise above 53 degrees. Rain commenced to fall during the afternoon. The glass last evening was steady. Waimate (24 hours ended 9 a.m. Wednesday)—Barometer, 29.70, steady; thermometer, highest 58.1, lowest 35; frost, 1 degree; wind gauge, miles run in the previous 24 hours, 82; bright sunshine, 4 hours 25 minutes. Yesterday was bright in the morning, but heavy rain fell in the afternoon. DOMINION METEOROLOGIST General situation —A rather intense secondary depression is crossing the Dominion. An extends from Eastern across the North Tasman Sea on to northern New Zealand. Winds—Moderate to strong westerly to southerly, reaching gale force at places. Seas (New Zealand waters)—Rough on the West Coast and about Foveaux Strait, elsewhere rather rough to rough. Eastern Tasman Sea—Strong southwesterly to southerly winds, with rough seas. Weather—Cold, changeable and squally, with showers in most districts; hail on parts of the coastal areas of the South Island. MR F. L. WOOLES Wind—Moderate to strong westerly to southerly ruling. Weather—Still more or less unsettled.
