LEVELS COUNTY

MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL

FINANCES REVIEWED A meeting of the Levels County Council was held yesterday. Present: Messrs T. B. Garrick (chairman), R. G. Cleland, T. W. Brosnahan and J. E. P. Cameron. Reviewing the financial position, the chairman said the debt balance on October 2 was £2545 13s sd, and expenditure during the month amounting to £656 Is Bd, plus unpresented cheques for £2 13s Id. made a total debit of £3204 8s 2d. Receipts since last meeting totalled £2645 17s Id, and an unpresented cheque brought that figure to £2655 11s lid. leaving a debit at the bank on November 5 of £548 16s 3d. Accounts to be passed totalled £1669 18s sd, which would leave a total debit balance to date of £2218 14s Bd. The position was a little better than at the corresponding time last year ,but the Council would have to go carefully, said Mr Garrick. A circular from the Public Works Department stated that many complaints had been received by the Main Highways Board in regard to the unsatisfactory maintenance that had been carried out by the Railway Department at level crossings. In order to rectify the position it had been arranged with the Railway Department that the Main Highways Board take over the maintenance of level crossings and pay the local bodies the usual £3 for £1 subsidy for any work involved. The South Canterbury Highways Traffic Group submitted a statement of receipts and payments for the half year ended September 30 and, as the debit balance was only £5 17s Id, it was not necessary to make a levy on members for one half year. Receipts for the period were £2O less than last year, which was accounted for by one quarter’s fees and fines which had not come to hand. Payments were £27 less than last year. The tender of J. E. Watson and Co., Ltd. (Invercargill), for dog collars, £35 3s, was accepted. Donations of £2 2s were made to the Temuka Technical College and the Royal Humane Society respectively.
