WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

RANGITATA At the last meeting of the Rangitata Women’s Institute Mrs Mahan presided over a good attendance of members. Motions of sympathy were passed with Mrs Williams and Miss Symons in their bereavements. Miss Ruby Tate was nominated as a member. Misses J. Shaw and W. Snell were elected to attend the Federation meeting at Waimate. Miss Brown, Temuka, gave very interesting and instructive demonstrations of pine needle work and beaten brass work. A very interesting and comprehensive report of Dominion Conference was given by Mrs Polaschek, for which she was accorded a vote of thanks. The competition for the best sultana cake was won by Mrs G. Tate. In the child’s embroidered frock competition Mrs Botting was placed first and Mesdames S. Palmer and Polaschek second and third respectively. During the afternoon a sale of goods from the Institute for the Blind was held. The hostesses were Mesdames G. Palmer, Polaschek, Ruddenklau and Miss Palmer, A short meeting of the committee was held when Mrs Mahan presided. It was decided to hold a euchre party and dance in the Rangitata Island Hall in October. It was to hold a competition for a Christmas dinner. A dainty afternoon tea was provided by Mrs Mahan and Misses J. Shaw and W. Snell. CAVE A very pleasant afternoon was spent at the ~ last meeting of the Cave Women’s Institute. Miss Amyes presided and extended a welcome to members and visitors. An invitation to attend the Ashwick Flat birthday party was received. The Cannington W.D.F.U. also extended an invitation to members to attend its birthday party. Mrs Rich and Mrs Sams were elected to attend the Federation meeting in Waimate and it was decided that Miss Weavers should represent Cave at the Educational Week to be held m Timaru. One new member was elected. Mrs McLeod of Tycho gave a very interesting demonstration of the making summer puddings. The demonstrator was accorded a vote of thanks. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Jones, Brown, Gillingham and Misses McPherson and Gillingham. Competition winners were.—Bowl of spring flowers: Mrs W Little 1 and 2. Miss Hunter 3. Three varieties afternoon tea cakes: Miss I. Moses 1, Mrs Brown 2, Miss D. Wisely 3. Piece of fine darning: Miss R. Wisely 1, Miss L. Clark 2, Mrs L. Gray 3. FAIR VIEW The September meeting of the Fairview Women’s Institute was held in the hall. The afternoon was devoted to the birthday ceremony, the secretary being called on to light the candle on the first birthday cake which was made and artistically decorated by the president. The treasurer blew the candle out, following which the vicepresident and president cut and distributed the cake among the members present. The delegate to the Dominion Conference then gave an interesting and comprehensive report, after wlr'-h the yearly prizes were distributed as follows.—Arts: Mrs Shewan 1, Mrs McPhedra:i 2. Cooking: Mrs McPhedran 1, Mrs F. Smith 2. Gardening: Mrs W. Butchers 1, Miss Rena Butchers and Mrs McPhedran equal 2. Most entries: Mrs McPhedran. The monthly competitions resulted. —Vase of flowers: Miss Mitchell 1, Mrs R Dale 2. Mrs T. Butchers 3. Knitting: Mrs R. Dale 1, Miss D. Butchers 2, Mrs Rad den and Mrs Hewitt equal 3. Six heaviest eggs (hens): Mrs Hodden 1, Mrs W. Butchers 2. Mrs Bailey and Mrs Beck equal 3. Premier bloom: Miss D. Butchers 1, Mrs Henderson 2, Mrs Cambell 3.
