FAREWELL SOCIAL AT SOUTHBURN There was a large gathering at Southbum on Friday night to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs McMillan and family who are leaving the district. The evening was spent in dancing, music being supplied by Mr and Mrs DeJoux. Mr Murray assisted with extras on the pipes. After supper, Mr N. Bell, chairman, spoke in eulogistic terms of the guests and called on Mr Joe Gibson, who on behalf of the residents of the district, asked Mr, and Mrs McMillan to accept a chiming elock with the best wishes of those present. Mr Kinross also recounted old times and expressed regret at the departure of Mr and Mrs McMillan, who had always been willing to assist any worthy cause in the district. Mr I. Thompson expressed regret at losing such a good neighbour. Other speakers representing the surrounding districts were Messrs J. McKeown, L. O’Loughlin, T. Nicholls, A. Woods (St. Andrews), and J. Gibson. Mr McMillan returned thanks for himself and Mrs McMillan after which they were accorded musical honours. Miss Ella Kinross on behalf of the young people of the district also expressed regret at the departure of the Misses M. and J. McMillan, and asked each to accept a leather handbag. Mr H. Luscombe replied on their behalf. Mr R. McMillan was also the recipient of a gift presented by Mr W. Bell, on behalf of the district. During the evening 1 Mr I. Thompson took the opportunity of welcoming to the district Mr and Mrs Murray and family. An apology was read from Mr R. P. Thompson. Messrs G. Hoare and E. Evans were M.C.’s.
