COUNTRY CENTRES Ashburton.—After a cold night, a frost of 8.4 degrees was registered yesterday morning. Fog hung over ’the town but cleared for the sun to shine until the sky clouded over before noon A bleak wind blew from the east and with an overcast sky made conditions very miserable. Waimate.—24 hours ended 9 a.m. yesterday. Barometer 30.50 (steady■*; thermometer, highest 57.7, lowest 31; wind gauge, miles run in previous 24 hours, 72; bright sunshine shrs 15min The weather yesterday was dull and overcast with a cold northerly breeze Geraldine.—Air temperature, max. 52, min. 24; 9 a.m., 30deg. Bright sunshine for several hours, dull and overcast later. Temuka. —For a while yesterday Temuka was enveloped in a light fog which gave place during the morning to another overcast sky with a little sun and a cold easterly wind. Maximum temperature 44 degrees; minimum 28. Frost, 4 degrees. Glass fairly high and steady. No rainfall. DOMINION METEOROLOGIST General Situation. —An anti-tyclone still envelopes the Dominion, but is moving slowly eastwards, while a depression is advancing across the North Tasman Sea. Winds.—Between north-easterly and south-easterly prevailing, strong north of Kawhia and East Cape, elsewhere light to moderate but freshening. Seas (New Zealand Waters). —Roush north of East Cape and off shore north of Cape Egmont, elsewhere smooth to moderate. Eastern Tasman Sea. —Moderate to strong north-east to south-east winds. seas moderate but rising in the northern portion. Weather. —Cloudy and unsettled in the far north and north-east portions of the North Island, with rain, elsewhere fair but cloud and mist increasing generally and rain gradually extending southwards especially to the eastern districts.
