WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

CAVE Miss Amyes presided over a good attendance of members at the July meeting of the Cave Women’s Institute. After the correspondence had been dealt with the monthly gardening notes were read by Mrs Squires. It was decided to knit peggy squares for next winter. Mrs Hart gave a very interesting demonstration of the making of a wool quilt for which she was accorded a vote of thanks. Afternoon tea was provided by the hostesses—Mesdames Paterson, Malthus, Laurie, Gray and Moses. A song was given by Mrs Pierce and folk dancing was then indulged in. Competitions resulted: Paper flowers. Mrs Brown 1, Mrs Cameron 2 and 3. Mrs Rodgers 1 and 2, Miss Hunter 3. Sponge roll: Miss D. Wisely J. Mrs Brown2, Miss R. Wisely 3. HINDS At the monthly meeting of the Hinds Women’s Institute, the president (Mrs McQuilkin) presided over a good attendance of members and visitors. It was reported that 15 members and all the car-drivers had attended the outing to the Ashburton Woollen Mills when the various departments were gone through, and a most interesting and instructive afternoon spent by all. The tutorial classes were discussed and several members decided to enrol. Mrs E. Davis gave an instructive talk on soap-making, explaining the various methods and showing several kinds of good home-made soap and by-products. Mrs Davis was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Miss E. Bell, with a team of school children, gave an attractive display of folk-dancing, later teaching members their first steps. Hostesses w r ere Mrs McQuilkin and Miss Frampton. Continuing the “Golden Thread” travel talks, Mrs Hockley spoke on “Some Aspects of the Silver Jubilee” in England, for which she was accorded a vote of thanks. The competitions resulted: Bowl of chrysanthemums, Mrs Bagrie 1. Four kinds of afternoon tea cakes, Mrs Tarbotton 1, Miss Faith Rickard 2. Crossstitch, Mrs Tarbotton 1 and 2 (pictures) .
