THE VAINER SEX
It is an interesting question whether men or women are the vainer. There is no final answer, as the problem cannot be solved by statistics, but impartial investigators, if they really are impartial, will tell you that the chief sufferers—and victims—are men
History teems with examples of men whom vanity has tripped up when the goal was in sight. There was the Frenchman, Rohan, vain enough to think the Queen of France w&s in love with him; he bought for her the Diamond Necklace, with results that scandalised the whole of France. There was the “gallant Chastelard. ’’ whose vainglorious wooing of Mary Queen of Scots brought him to the block. Remember Queen Elizabeth, the vainest woman of her time, who was not vain enough to lose either her heart or her head. Contrast her with Essex, whose vanity cost him his life. Coming to our own day. Think of the £25 cheques that have enriched the Treasury because of the vanity of certain would-be politicians who have forfeited their deposits. Yes, the worst offenders are the men.
