Mr E. C. Bathurst, J.P., of Alienton, has been appointed Coroner for the Ashburton district, in place of Mr R. Clark, J.F., who retired from the position a short time ago on account of ill-health. Notification of his appointment was received by Mr Bathurst yesterday. He will probably be sworn in by the Magistrate, Mr J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M., when he visits Ashburton on Friday, in place of Mr C. R. Orr Walker, who has been Indisposed. Mr Bathurst, who has been a storekeeper In the Allenton district for a number of years, has always taken a keen and active interest in anything that was for the welfare of the western suburb. He is chairman of the Allenton School Committee and the Allenton Fire Brigade, and has held office as president of the Allenton Sports Club. He is the vicar’s warden of St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, Ashburton, and a former chairman of the Ashburton East Dental Clinic Committee.
