CAUSE AND CURE OF CANCER
NEED FOR RESEARCH WORK
POWERFUL APPEAL IN AUSTRALIA United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received May 14, 8.25 p.m.) CANBERRA, May 14. Dr. F. P. Sandes, director of cancer treatment at Sydney University, submitted a special report at the cancer experts’ conference to-day, in which he recommends the establishment by the Commonwealth of an Australian Cancer Commission comprising a publicist and therapist and a scientist, between 35 and 45 years of age, with vision, driving power and experience in the different aspects of their work, and with a tenure of 10 to 15 years. They should be empowered to plan a scheme of research, not necessarily following methods in other parts of the world.
Dr. Sandes’s report follows his investigations overseas, on behalf of the Commonwealth. He forecasts that at no distant date television will play an important part <Jn the attack on cancer.
The Rt. Hon. W. M. Hughes, M.P., Federal Minister of Health, in opening the conference, expressed the hope that the deliberations would result in at least one step forward on the hard road towards the discovery of the cause and remedy for cancer, which at present was causing the deaths of 105 per 100,000 of the Australian population.
