MONTHLY MEETING OF COURT

MANY CASES HEARD Several breaches of the Licensing Act came before Mr C. R. Orr-Walker, S.M.. at the monthly sitting of the Temuka Magistrate’s Court yesterday. For entering licensed premises while prohibited, Nicholas Louis Fitzgerald, who did not appear, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within six months. James Alexander Mcßride, of Timaru, charged with procuring liquor while prohibited, was fined £1 with costs 10/-. John Patrick, farmer, of Hilton, appeared on a charge of supplying beer to a person under the age of 21 years on the licensed premises of the Royal Hotel, he being a person other than the licensee. Sydney Grigg O’Sullivan, of Hilton, the youth concerned, was charged with being a party to the offence. Mr G. J. Walker appeared for both, and pleaded guilty. Patrick was fined £1 with costs 12/-, and O’Sullivan was ordered to pay costs. Cornelius Hanifin, charged with being found unlawfully on licensed premises, was fined £1 with costs. Motoring Offences On a charge of driving a motor-truck not equipped with brakes complying with the regulations, John William Burnham, of Geraldine, through Mr F. J. Smith, pleaded guilty. A fine of £2 with costs 10/- was imposed. For driving a motor-cycle at a speed which might have been dangerous to the public, Douglas Andrew Hall, of Otaio, was fined £2 10s with costs 12/and cancellation of his license for the remainder of the period was ordered, the license to be endorsed. Incorrect Scales For having in his possession for trade purposes a scale which was incorrect, William Quested who was proceeded against by the # Inspector of Weights and Measures (Mr G. McKessar), was fined 30/- and costs. Levy Not Paid John Burke, Belfield, Orari, for being in default of payment of his unemployment levy due on February 1, 1935, was fined £5 and costs. Unlighted Bicycles Wiremu Mihaka and Tupai Reihana voluntarily appeared for riding bicycles without lights. They were each fined 10/- with costs 3/-. Gordon Collins, for a similar offence, was fined 5/with costs 3/-. On the information of the Traffic Inspector, Michael Kennedy, on a similar charge, was fined 10/- with costs 10/-. Charles Aker was also fined 10/- with costs 10/-. Chimney on Fire For allowing a chmney to catch fire George Edward Binion Cooper was fined 5/- with costs. Civil Claim E. E. Scott, Geraldine. proceeded against Marion Maude Williams for the sum of £54 14s 9d. Mr M. Raymond appeared for the plaintiff, and the defendant was represented by Mr Mr G. J. Walker. The defendant paid into Court the sum of £l3 9s 5d and disputed the remainder. After hearing the evidence the Magistrate said he was not satisfied that Mrs Williams took over her late husband’s liabilities, and judgment was given for the amount paid into Court, plaintiff being non-suited for the balance of the claim, £42 13s 4d. J. Hanifin was ordered to give possession of a house to W. C. Jones on or before May 31, and to pay rent £3l with costs £4 11s 6d. Thomas Small was ordered to pay Lewis Hunt £4 19s on or before May 31 in default 10 days’ imprisonment, warrant to be suspended so long as he pays £1 10s a month, the first payment to be made on May 31.

R.S.A. The Temuka Branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association held its monthly meeting on Monday evening. Present: Messrs J. King (chairman), W. F. Evans, W. Oldfield, J. McLeod, A. R. Beck, H. Wilson, W. Spillane, E. G. Darby and A. W. Buzan. The president reported that the Poppy Day appeal had resulted in a good return. The great majority of the public had an idea that the proceeds from poppy sales were spent in the general funds, but he could assure them that they were spent on the helping of needy cases only. The lady supporters of the Association had again supported the branch well in the matter of selling. There had been a good muster of Returned men at the Anzac Day service at Temuka, and the branch had been represented at Winchester and Clandeboye as well as at a special service at the Anglican Church on the folowing Sunday. He congratulated Messrs Buzan and T. H. Langford on their election to the Power Board. Headquarters advised that £7 had been granted out of the Canteen and Regimental Trust Fund to the branch for the relief of distress. Particulars of the Kitchener Memorial Scholarship Fund were received from the Headquarters. Advice that the annual Dominion conference would be held in Wellington in June was also received. A letter of congratulation on the increase in membership was received, Temuka being thirty-third on the list. The Clandeboye-Milford branch forwarded an invitation to its annual reunion. Referring to the growth of the unemployed, the president remarked that there were 58 unemployed ex-soldiers in Temuka as against 14 in Waimate, 12 in Geraldine and 124 in Timaru. Mr Oldfield said that at recent parades all returned men did not wear ribbons and medals. He would like to see all the men wearing the one type of decoration. The opinion of the annual meeting should be sought c the question, possibly by the taking of a vote. This course was decided on. In closing the meeting, the president thanked the committee for its support during the year. He also thanked the newspapers for their reports of meetings. vlr Wilson returned thanks, stating that it had been a pleasure to serve under Mr King. He also congratulated Messrs King and Evans on being re-elected to the Borough Council.

LIBRARY COMMITTEE The committee of the Temuka Public Library met on Monday. Present: Messrs J. T. Smart (president), W. L. Kingston, L. G. Scrimshaw, W. B. Sutcliffe, Mesdames W. F. Evans, G. Thomson, T. E. Shiels and the secretary, Mr F. J. Smith. The Pleasant Point Library Committee wrote asking to what extent the Temuka Borough Council assisted the committee. It was agreed to reply giving the information required. The librarian (Mrs T. Webb) reported that the membership was on

the increase and now stood at 210. Books exchanged numbered 1185, and magazines 351. The month’s revenue totalled £2O/0/3. The treasurer (Mr W. B. Sutcliffe) reported that at last the committee was clear of debt and that there was now a credit bank balance of £7. BASKETBALL The draw for the Temuka and District Basketball Sub-Association’s competition games which commence tomorrow, is:— First grade: Temuka Young Women v. Clandeboys, at Presbyterian court, at 2.15; referee, Mrs Havhurst. High School Old Girls v. Pleasant Point, Presbyterian court, 3 p.m.; Miss M. Hanifin. Second grade: Geraldine v. Temuka High School, at Geraldine, at 3 p.m.; Mr Malcolmson. Milford v. H.5.0.G., at Milford, 2.30; Miss W. Ives. Temuka Young Women v Winchester, at Winchester, 2.30; referee to be arranged. Third grade: Geraldine A v. Kerry - town, at Geraldine, 2.15; Mr Malcolmson. Pleasant Point v. Temuka Young Women, Point, 2.30; Miss Clelland. Orton v. Geraldine B, Orton, 2.30; Miss Powell. Clandeboye v. Arowhenua, Clandeboye, 2.30; Mr Armstrong. MINIATURE RIFLES At the weekly shoot of the Temuka Miniature Rifle Club on Monday evening the best scores off the rifle for Mr W. H. McMillan’s trophy were: V. Nicholas 79, E. Cooper 79, L. McKessar 78, B. Edwards 77, J. H. Bennett 77, C. Sanders 76, W. Westoby 76, F. Weston 76, S. Nicholas 75, S. Kimber 73, E. Darling 72, O. Quirke 72. Those to shoot-off next week are: Cooper, McKessar, Edwards, Bennett, Sanders, Westoby, Weston and Quirke. In the shoot-off for Mr W. S. Harbrow’s trophy E. Cooper and L. McKessar tied and in the second shoot Cooper won with a score of 79 off the rifle. At the first trophy shoot of the Winchester ’s Men’s Club the scores were: J. Smith 80, W. Priddle 79, W. Pierce 79, A. Sangster 79, N. Priddle 78, H. Hicks 78, John Cripps 77, Jim Cripps 77, T. Cribb 76, G. Louden 75, O. S. Priest 75, C. Louden 75, C. Higinbottom 74, J. Greenall 74, W. Gudsell 74, A.
