A Toast to HhO. Mr. Chairman Gentlemen t I have been asked to propose a toast to Water, the best and purest thing that was ever made ... I have seen water tumbling down the mountain sides in cascades of liquid silver, purling over pebbles and mossy stones ... I have seen water in teardrops on the sleeping lids of infancy: I have seen it trickling down the wrinkled face of age ... I have seen water storm the earth with a bombardment of hailstones, to the accompaniment of lightning flashes and the thunder of the heaven's artillery ... I have seen water in sparkling dewdrops on tiny blades of grass; flashing like polished diamonds as the morning sun bursts with its resplendent beauty over the eastern hills ... I have seen water in maddening cataracts crash over Niagara in its mad, tumultuous stampede to gain the broad and mighty ocean, on whose bosom float the battleship* of the world ... I have seen water in limpid, langourous lagoons, warm and sensuous, on whose emerald surface floats water lilies of jade and crimson ...
