LABOUR GAINS IN QUEENSLAND
RETURN OF SITTING GOVERNMENT MODERATES IN MOVEMENT SUCCEED United Press Association—By Electrlo Telegraph—Copyright (Received May 12, 6.30 p.m.) BRISBANE, May 12. The Queensland State elections were held yesterday, and by midnight it was shown that Labour had gained no fewer than six seats, among which in the Metropolitan area, Mr Logan (Sandgate) Mr Windsor (Wynnum), and Mr Power (Bardona) gained easy victories. The following Ministers were returned unopposed: Mr F. W. Bulcock (Barcoo), Minister for Agriculture; Mr F. M. Hanlon (Ithaca), Home Secretary; Mr G. Pollock (Speaker), and Mr W. Mullen (Carpentaria), AttorneyGeneral.
One of the biggest surprises was the victory of Mr Brown (Labour) over Mr King for Logan. Mr A. E. Moore (Leader of the Opposition) was returned unopposed. Victory for Moderates The polling is hailed as a triumph for moderate Labour, which is likely to secure forty-five seats with the remaining seventeen going to Country and Progressive Nationalists' The Independents lost their one seat in the House. Labour did not lose a single seat, and it is conservatively estimated the Party will win twelve —and possibly two more, resulting in the following state of Parties: Labour 47 Opposition 15 Although the Douglas Creidt candidates polled better than in New South Wales, they were unable to win a seat. The Communists polled very poorly, and the majority seem certain to lose their deposits. Mr R. M. King (Deputy-Leader of the Opposition) is among th» vanquished, after representing Logan -for fifteen years. The Premier (Mr Forgan Smith) after the election, stated that the victory would go down as one of the most outstanding in the annals of the State. The large majority would enable the Government to proceed with the colossal but not unsuperable task of restoring the State to its former prosperity. After the Polling The Leader of the Opposition (Mr Moore) said he could only accept the position with fortitude. “Though our numbers have been depleted,” he said, “we represent a large section of the community, and must endeavour by our work to win back confidence."
