The theory that the sailing ship affords the best training for apprentices in the mercantile marine has been officially exploded by the Manning Committee of the British Shipping Federation, which considers that the deep-sea sailing ship has disappeared. Her memory has been surrounded by a glamour of romance which has been the inspiration of a good deal of sentimental, but not very practical talk on this subject. The committee has therefore decided not to recommend any scheme for providing for sailing ship training.
