WOOL OUTLOOK

COMMENT OF LEADING BUYERS United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, May 9. Dawson’s Ltd., in commenting on the opening of the wool sales yesterday, says that the selection was above the average. Tire outstanding feature was the Continental buyers’ special keenness for crossbreds, though Germany bought little. Competition was brisk, but the outlook is difficult to gauge. Tops did not respond to the recent advances in raw material. Yarns are suffering spasmodic demand. Further rises in wool values may check the consumption, which is irregular. The worsted mills are fairly prosperous, but the woollen section of the trade, however, is quiet, many machines being idle. The greatest need at the moment is a rise in the price of manufactured goods. Competition Sustained. At the wool sales to-day, 10,974 bales were offered, including 3740 from New Zealand. About 5964 bales of Australian and New Zealand clips were sold. There was sustained Home and Continental competition and the firm tone of the opening rates was fully maintained. New Zealand scoured merinos branded “Braemar,” realised 25d; the average being 231 d; greasy crossbred branded MB brought 10 2d, the average being 81d. In the Bradford tops market there is a fair amount of business. The quotations are: 70’s, 28Ad; 64’s, 263 d; 60’s, 25d; 56’s, 186 d; 50’s, 14d; 46’s, lid; 40’s, 9Sd.
