GOLF

PLAY IN WOMEN’S TOURNEY FINALISTS FOUND Finalists in the South Canterbury women’s golf championship were found yesterday when the Timaru Ladies’ Golf Club continued its annual tournament at Highfield. As a result of yesterday’s play. Miss J. Horwell, holder of the title, and Miss F. Pringle, will contest the final thus morning. In spite of Thursday’s heavy rain the links quickly dried out yesterday morning and, although low-lying patches were heavy, the course was in surprisingly good order when the semifinals were played in the afternoon. The fast drying greens, however, proved disconcerting to some players, and putting and approaching generally were responsible for indifferent scores. In face of the prevailing conditions the performance of Miss Horwell in covering the first nine holes in the afternoon in 37, two over bogey, was very creditable, and her opponent, Mrs J. C. Templer was only one stroke more. When Miss Horwell won at the 16th green she required two fives for a round of 78, which would have been good scoring for semi-final play. The Eliminating Round In the eliminating round yesterday morning there were no upsets. Miss Horwell gaining a runaway win over Mrs M. Grant, 7 up and 5 to play, and Mrs W. A. Scott defeating Miss V. Campbell comfortably, 4 up and 3 to play. Mrs Templer and Mrs N. Hawkes had a more even game, Mrs Templer eventually succeeding 3 up and 2 to play. The most interesting game was that between Miss F. Pringle and Miss H. Loughnan, of Christchurch, the Timaru player winning one up on the last green. The fortunes see-sawed on the outward journey and when the turn was reached the pair were all square, each having won three holes and three being halved. Miss Pringle ran into a 2 up lead, winning Seaview and the Dive, but Miss Loughnan took Poplars in bogey. Port Arthur was halved and when Miss Pringle won both the Terrace and Plantation she became dormie three. Miss Loughnan put up a valiant fight over the last three holes, winning at Midway with a bogey 5 and the Gap with 6 to 7. Miss Pringle was one up at the last tee and Miss Loughnan could not do better than halve the Home hole in bogey five, giving Miss Pringle the match, one up after a close contest.

An Interesting Match In the top half of the draw in the semi-finals Miss Pringle had an interesting match against last year’s runner-up, Mrs W. A. Scott. Miss Pringle began well, taking the first hole with a birdie 3 to her opponent’s 4 and the second in 5 to 6. Burnside was halved in bogey but Mrs Scott reduced her opponent’s lead to one up when she took Bumpy with a well played 3, Miss Pringle taking one more. Halves at Hillside, the Knob, Ridge and Chasm left the match unchanged, but at Lindsay’s Mrs Scott was down in 5 to 6, the pair turning all square. Both took 41 for the outward journey. Miss Pringle took the lead again at Seaview, which she won in 6 to 7, and Dive and Poplars were halved. A bogey 3 at Port Arthur gave her a 2 up lead and she improved her position to 3 up at the Terrace, where she again recorded bogey figures. When Plantation was halved in 6, Miss Pringle became dormie three, but she failed to sink her putt at Midway, which Mrs Scott took in 5 to 6. Mrs Scott was waging an uphill fight to keep the game alive, and when Miss Pringle topped her third shot at the Gap into the steep creek bed, Mrs Scott played well up to the green. Miss Pringle failed to extricate herself from trouble with her next shot, but was on the green in 5. She missed a longish putt for the half and Mrs Scott retrieved another hole, going to the last tee one down. Both got good drives at the Home hole, and were on the green in 3. Mrs Scott had a long putt to hole to square the match, but she failed and a half in bogey 5 resulted, giving Miss Pringle the match 1 up. The cards were:— Miss Pringle Out: 3554 5 454 G~4l In: 63633667 5—45—86 Mrs Scott Out: 465354 5 4 5—41 In: 73644656 5—46—87 Miss Horwell Wins In the other semi-final Miss Horwell and Mrs Templer began steadily, halving the first hole in bogey and the next in 5. Another half was registered at Burnside, where both recorded bogey figures, but Miss Horwell assumed the lead at Bumpy, which she took in 3 to 4, and increased her advantage to two up at Hillside with another bogey, Mi's Templer taking 5. Mrs Templer won one back at the knob in 3 to 4. but she lost another hole at the Ridge, where her bogey 4 was not , good enough to win from Miss Hor- , well, who registered a birdie 3. Chasm , was halved in bogey and when Mrs • Templer won Lindsay’s in 4 to 5, Miss : Horwell’s lead was reduced to 1 up • at the turn. Miss Horwell took 37 , strokes for the first nine holes and Mrs i Templer 38. A good 5 at Seaview restored Miss Horwell her lead of 2 up, ; and she became 3 up at the Poplars, - which she took in 5 to 6. Port Arthur . was halved in 4 and Mrs Templer took

j the Terrace in bogey 3, but Miss Hori well got another win at Plantation In 5 to 6, making her dormie three. Midway was evenly played and a half in bogey 5 resulted, giving Miss Horwell a victory of 3 up and 2 to play. Campbell taking Mrs J. G. Johnston to the 19th green before accepting defeat, and Miss D. Davies beating Mrs E. F. O'Leary one up on the last green. Misses G. Manchester and I. McKerchar got through to the semifinals without being extended. In the semi-finals. Miss Manchester accounted for Mrs Johnston 3 up and 2 to play, and Miss McKerchar beat Miss Davies 2 up and 1 to play.
