EXHIBITION OF WORK

SOUTH CANTERBURY ARTISTS The second exhibition of work by South Canterbury artists is now being held in the upstairs room of the Mt. Cook Tourist Company’s offices. It is perhaps not so strongly supported by the better painters as last year, but is obviously filling a want in encouraging young people to show their work, and in finding those who are interested. It is hoped that the endeavour may grow and eventually form an art society, when talent and support are forthcoming in sufficient strength. The four water colours by Mrs N. Hope are perhaps the most outstanding pictures in the exhibition, the imaginative treatment of “The Poplars” being extremely satisfying. Her Mt. Cook also expresses solidity and the real alpine atmosphere at the same time. Mr Duncan Darroch shows only three small oil paintings this year, the vivid evening light on his “Nun’s Veil” .being characteristic of his strong work. Miss Drummond Sharpe shows three fine oils, “Lake Wanaka” being perhaps her most outstanding. Mr Killick has some very pleasing flower studies, a geranium in a pot being a gem. Mr McLintock shows a group of excellent etchings, as well as two water colours, which are particularly interesting in their modern composition and clear colour. Mr Neville Smith is represented by a number of studies in California and Mexico, his “Snow and Tussock” and “Market Scene in Old Mexico” being interesting in colour and subject. Mrs R. L. Wigley shows a number of New Zealand subjects, “A South Canterbury River Bed” and “Fields by the Sea” being perhaps the best. Mrs Stone-Wigg and Miss Mary Barker are represerted by water colours of some charm, and there are still life studies by N. Woodward and R. Macdonald, also landscapes by Mr Lachlan McCormack, and others whose wcrk shows distinct promise. It is hoped that they will one and all persevere and send in a fine batch next year.
