WAIMATE

HALF-HOLIDAY TO BE SATURDAY MR JOHNSTONE RETURNED FOR OTAIO In Waimate yesterday, there being no election for either Mayor or councillors, the borough did not appear at any time a great deal busier than usual to cope with the only vote being taken; that to decide the halfholiday question for the ensuing year. Appearances throughout the day did not lead an observer to suppose that intensive interest in thfe town was being taken in the ballot, as nowhere near the 1612 persons eligible to vote appeared to have exercised their privilege. In Otaio riding, however, where 331 electors were eligible to exercise the franchise for the election of a representative on the Waimate County Council, the majority availed themselves of the privilege. Results at Waimate were awaited with interest by, groups of interested spectators, and the figures for the two polls were as under:— Half-Holiday Poll For Saturday * 415 For Thursday 289 Informal 4 Otaio Seat on Waimate County Council H. B. S. Johnstone 147 J. Gregan 105 HUNT CLUB The opening meet of the Waimate District Hunt was held at Miss Manchester’s. Hounds found almost immediately, and puss headed for the main road, which she crossed into “Downlands.” Here she circled righthanded and after a very fast burst through several fields she ran down a big gorse fence to the main road and escaped. Hounds were then taken back into “Downlands” and a fresh hare was soon away. After running through two fields beside the road she crossed into Mr Keugler’s and ran down a ridge and then right-handed into a gully where hounds pulled her down. A move was made into Mr Medlicott’s. A hare was viewed making towards the house, but owing to the patchy scent was soon lost. Hounds were then taken across the main road into Mr Manchester’s, but shortly after the order was given to pack up as scent was failing badly. Those following were: The Master (Mr C. Douglas) on Waikari, Huntsman J. Shaw on Peter, Misses J. Johnstone on Tasman, L. Winter on Red Peter, J. Studholme on Sam, J. Harper on Macduff. Messrs A. Medlicott on Joker, M.
