RACING & TROTTING

On And Off The Track \ BUDGET OP NEWS AND VIEWS FIXTURES Racing - : May 11 —Amberley R.C. May 11, 13—Nelson J.C. May 16, 18—Wanganui J.C. May 17, 18—Marlborough R.C. May 17, 18—Southland R.C. May 18—Ashburton County R.C. May 23, 25—Te Kuiti R.C. May 25—South Canterbury J.C. Trotting: May 11—Oamaru T.C. May 11, 13—Waikato T.C. May 16—Marlborough T.C. June 1, 3—Canterbury Park T.C. The big Hinds pacer Noble Prince has been purchased by two North Canterbury men, and in future is to be trained by E. J. Smith. The' trotter Walter Wrack, who won the Spaxton Handicap at Methven, is trained by J. Fraser jnr, best known as reinsman for the Dunlevey stable. Grand Mogul is rather soft-looking, but he showed that he is solid by stepping 3.24 2-5 on a dead track at Methven, after being hard at it all the way. He has improved a good deal since he came to Canterbury. Mount Val, who did not show much form in his few previous starts gave a much improved display at Dunedin. Being by Valkyrian he should continue to progress, though he may never be as good as his half-brother Mount Boa.

War Buoy was nominated for two races at Oamaru, but the four-year-old champion is being reserved for the Canterbury Park meeting, where the classes are more suitable for a twomile assignment.

It is stated that the connections of Graham Direct are anxious to have him included in the match between the Victorian crack three-year-old pacer Tennessee Wood and the Westralian Derby winner Donald Winwood.

L. J. Ellis steered three winners at Hokitika on Saturday, and W. J. Broughton brought home three at Hawera, Ellis thus maintaining his lead of three points. On Monday, the relative positions remained unchanged, each jockey scoring one point. Mary Pratt’s win of a division of the Trial Handicap at Dunedin made her ineligible to start in the Trial at Invercargill next week. Foreign Star, winner of the second division, also forfeited her qualification for the same race.

S. G. Ware usually has a horse or two racing in his own name, but although he had won plenty of races at Wingatui with members of Mr G. J-. Barton’s team, it was years since he had won there on. his o\fn account until Foreign Star won on Monday.

Takakua, who won the Warrnambool Cup in Victoria, is a New Zealand bred gelding by Royal Divorce from Outlet, who registered some useful performances in the Dominion before leaving B. Burgess’ stable to join M. McGrath’s team at Caulfield. A most unusual feature of the jubilee meeting at Dunedin was that all eight races were won by horses trained at Wingatui or in the neighbourhood. C. Gieseler, S. G. Ware and F. Shaw each produced two winners, and D. P. Wilson and H. V. Smith one apiece.

King Icel, who was imported from Hawke’s Bay by Mr A. Austin, is being qualified with the South Canterbury Hunt. Another recent purchase by the Albury owner, a three-year-old by Day Comet from a half sister to Rapier, is being broken in at the Kennels.

Ann Parrish’s win at Methven incurred no penalty for the Washdyke trotter. She gave away four seconds to start at Forbury, where she ran second and fixed her assessment on 3.45, compared with the 3.49 limit at Methven. Had she finished out of a place at Methven she would still have been pegged back to 3.45. Royal Limond is a sluggish horse, and requires a lot of urging into his fences. This made things very hard for D. O’Connor when he lost his whip at the second fence in the steeplechase at Dunedin, and not too much notice should be taken of that defeat. Royal Limond is a slow but quite safe jumper, and his steeplechase prospects look good. Taxpayer is unlikely to reach the same plane as Indianapolis, whom he defeated two seasons ago in the Derby, but he will win a lot of races. He appeared to lose the big event at Forbury by running out at the turn into the straight and giving Craganour an opening on the rails which enabled the last-named to get up and beat him.

Membo ocupied an unusual position in being in charge for the first two furlongs in the Celebration Steeplechase at Dunedin, but he dropped back to last a furlong further on, and never got near the leaders again. Last season he took a long time to race into winning form, and it looks as if it will be the same this winter. He will have to come to hand quickly if he is to have a chance in Victoria.

After Rufe Naylor obtained a Supreme Court decision that the A.J.C. was not empowered to exclude him from Randwick, the Club determined to appeal to the Privy Council. Since then an Act has been passed by the New South Wales Parliament giving the Club wider powers to refuse admission to those it deems undesirables, and the appeal is not likely to be proceeded with.

R. Beale, who is understood to be “wanted ’ to explain his alleged failure to fulfil riding engagements at Riverton, was before the Dunedin stewards to answer a similar complaint. It was asserted that he had broken a contract to ride Membo for the season, but the stewards decided that an engagement for such a term constituted a retainer and as such had to be in writing. As a result no action could be taken. Transact, who won both steeplechases at the Egmont meeting, had won some hurdle races, but had not previously raced over big fences. He is trained by A. M. Wright, who has a fine record in this department of racing. In a schooling task on the eve of the meeting Transact shaped indifferently, but he went well with the colours up. He is by Monchineel (by Maniopoto) sire of that great allrounder Nukumai. A dividend indicator of the type introduced at Trentham was operated at Wingatui on Monday, with apparently completely satisfactory results. Probably it restricted betting on the or two while the public were seizing it up, but it certainly accelerated wagering on the rest of the card, as backers could see at a glance the

ruling odds about any horse for either I win or place. It did not, as some people thought, show the ultimate dividend, | but. only the approximate figures when • a bet was made. The progeny of Australian-bred sires who competed at the Australian Jockey Club’s autumn meeting cut a small figure compared with those by imported horses. During the four days, 25 races were decided, and Heroic (b/ Valais) and Rivoli (by Repartee), who each had two winners, were the only colonial-bred sires to have a place m the winning sires’ list. In 20 races all the places were filled by the progeny of imported sires, Pantheon (by Tracery), Constant Son (by Son-in-Law), Night Raid (by Radium), and Musketoon (by Chaucer), were equal with two winners each. RICCARTON NOTES Special to " The Timaru Herald." CHRISTCHURCH, May 7. The heavy rain of the last few clays has interfered with training operations at Riecarton. There was no fast work this morning, trainers who had their horses out having to be content with useful pacing on the sand, which was the only track available. Chidden pulled up lame after her work at Riecarton this morning. She will be treated to a spell and will have to miss her engagement at Amberley. where she was to have had her last race before having a rest. Provided the lameness proves only temporary, she may be a good performer next season, as she comes from a family which has required age. D. O’Connor, with Royal Limond, and F. Christmas, with Fair Weather, arrived back at Riecarton this morning after assisting at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting the previous day. Royal Limond appears to have been very unlucky in the Celebration Steeplechase at Dunedin, in which he ran third to Umtali and Graball. He was ridden by his trainer, who lost his whip at the second fence. This was a serious disability as the horse is lazy and requires keeping up to his work especially at jumps. Mr A. Syme has decided on a North Island campaign with Royal Limond, and O’Connor will take the gelding north on Monday night. The intention is to race him at Wanganui next week, followed by Te Kuiti and then Ellerslie, where the Great Northern Steeplechase will be the principal event of the trip. Royal Limond has made great improvement in his jumping and has excellent prospects during the next few weeks. The programme for the Grand National meeting was approved to-day by the committee of the Canterbury Jockey Club. It provides stakes totalling £6700, compared with £6410 last year. Increase of £290 is shared by eight races, mostly minor events, though the Islington Handicap receives an extra £IOO. The Jumpers’ Flat Handicap will be for horses who have completed the course in at least three steeplechases or hurdle races, to be ridden by jockeys who have ridden in not less than three such races since the beginning of this season.
