AMERICAN FLYING DISASTER FOUR KILLED AND MANY INJURED United Press Association —Bv Electrlo Telegraph—Copyright (Received May 7, 5.5 p.m.) KANSAS CITY, May 6. Senator Bronson Cutting (46), of New Mexico, and three others, were killed when the giant Douglas monoplane of the Transcontinental Western Airway, crashed while making a forced landing in a fog near Atlanta (Missouri) .
The other dead are: Pilot Harvey Bolton. Co-pilot Kenneth Greeson. Miss Jeanne Hillias, 20. The remaining nine passengers who were injured, were among the group of Hollywood motion picture men en route to Annapolis (Maryland) to make a motion picture at the United States Naval Academy. The injured include: Richard Wallace, director, Paul Wing, father of the actress. Toby Patricia, who suffered from a crushed chest. William Kaplan, assistant producer. C. G. Drew, technician. Mrs Kaplan. All are seriously injured. Mrs Kaplan will probably be permanently paralysed. All the picture people were of the Paramount studios. Failure of Fuel Supply After a non-stop flight from Los Angeles, en route to New York, the craft arrived over Kansas city airport at 2.30 this morning. The fog was so dense that they were unable to land. The radio control on the ground ordered the plane to proceed to the emergency landing at Kirksville (Missouri) 135 miles eastward. After covering 120 miles, the plane’s fuel supply apparently became exhausted, and it was necessary to make a forced landing In a rough field. The plane crashed into a bank and turned over. Senator Cutting was instantly crushed to death. In Washington, both Houses and the Congress adjourned, as a tribute to the dead Senator, who was one of the leading Republican progressives of the Congress, and had frequently been mentioned as a possible presidential candidate in 1936 or 1940. The pilot (Bolton) gasped before he died: “I was forced down, because of lack of gasoline.” Before the crash he shouted: “Buckle your belts tight.”
