JUBILEE BALL AND SPORTS A GREAT SUCCESS Bringing to a close a memorable occasion, the ball in connection with the King’s Silver Jubilee celebrations was held in the Drill Hall on Monday night, following the fireworks display and bonfire. For the functions earlier in the day there had been a crowd of approximately 2000 and many people stayed in town and went to the Drill Hall in the evening. The Football Club had charge of the arrangements and with Mr C. F. de Joux (who had carried out many of the duties of organisation throughout the day) as master of ceremonies an attractive programme of dances was provided. The hall was decorated with flags and streamers and a spotlight produced attractive effects. For the earlier part of the evening the Mayor (Mr A. W. Buzan) and Mayoress were present as well as members of the Jubilee Committee. Music was supplied by a local orchestra and extras were contributed by Misses E. McGarva and R. Hoare.

Recognition of the King’s Jubilee will be accorded at the Temuka District High School on Friday afternoon, when the pupils are to be assembled for an address by the Rev. C. L. Mountfort, preparatory to the planting of a tree to commemorate the occasion. The opportunity is to be taken to present the souvenir booklets to the pupils, and parents and the public are invited to attend.

MEMORIAL TREES The planting of a tree in the Temuka Domain on Monday to mark the celebration of the King’s Silver Jubilee recalls several similar occasions, the result of which has been the collecting of quite a number of memorial trees. Not far from the liquidamber straciflua planted on Monday, there Is a scarlet oak planted by Mrs Gunnion, when Mayoress, on July, 1919, to commemorate the signing of peace. Behind the War Memorial, an oak commemorates the coronation of King George, and in front of the curator’s cottage an oak was planted on the occasion of the fiftieth year of Queen Victoria’s reign. The Diamond Jubilee of her reign was marked by the planting cf the oak, under which Monday’s addresses were given, on June 22, 1897. by Messrs J. Talbot, J. Ashwell and E. Cutten.

GENERAL NEWS In the glass house at the rear of his cottage the curator of the Temuka Domain (Mr G. Fletcher) has raised some very fine varieties of chrysanthemums. Several colours are included and many of the flowers are .oven inches and more in diameter. To protect it against the weather, the memorial arch at the Arowhenua Pa is being painted with a spec’ai preparation. The decision of the Domain Board to widen the entrance to the motor camp by extending the culvert and lifting and replanting a portion of the oleria hedge has been carried into effect. The Waitohi Women’s Institute will hold a dance in the Institute rooms, Waitohi Flat on Friday at 8 p.m.
