DOUBLE WEDDING

Much interest was aroused among friends at Timaru on Easter Monday morning, when the Rev. J. Evans officiated at a double wedding at St. Mary’s Church, with Miss Sylvia Rudge at the organ. The wedding was that of the two daughters of Mrs H. M. Newman and the late Mr C. Newman, Le Cren Street, Timaru. Miss Elma Mary Newman, the eldest daughter, was married to Mr Frank Stowell, elder son of Mr and Mrs F. Stowell. Gibson Street, Timaru, and the second daughter, Miss Elizabeth Ethel Newman, to Mr Stanley Maurice Brown, second son of Mr and Mrs W. H. T. Brown, of Oamaru.

Vivid red bouquets of abutilons and carnations showed in delightful contrast against their parchment crepe de chine gowns, which were both fashioned alike on long, graceful lines. The fitted bodice, with half-belt held by a brilliant clasp, showed a deep squarecut inset panel of cobweb lace cowled at the neck in front, and continuing over the shoulders to form a rounded yoke at the back. The long sleeves were designed with a deep flare of the lace from the elbows. Their veils of embroidered silk net were arranged to flow as trains from coronets and clusters of orange blossom buds. The frocks worn by the bridesmaids were in opal-green georgette, and they fell into a soft bordering flounce, the skirts being trimmed at knee-length with a frill mounting slightly higher at the back to meet at the waist with a large bow, and a feature of the bodice was the soft berthe collar. They wore circlets of gold and green flowers in their hair, and carried posies of marigolds and gold tinged dahlias.

Miss Elma Newman was escorted by her brother, Mr William Newman, and was attended by her sister. Miss Gertrude Newman, while Mr Charles Newman gave away Miss Ethel Newman whose small sister, Doreen Newman acted as her maid. A cousin, Mr J. Munro, of Albury. assisted Mr Stowell, and Mr Bert Brown, of Dunedin, attended his brother as best man.

The wedding reception was held at the Cafe Carlton, where each bride cut a two-tiered cake. Mrs Newman received the guests wearing a black and white floral marocain gown, black three-quarter coat, and felt hat relieved with white, and she carried an autumn-shaded bouquet of chrysanthemums. Mrs Stowell, mother of the bridegroom, was in black ensemble and a black velour hat, and she held red carnations. Mrs W. H. T. Brown, mother of the bridegroom, was in a black crepe cotele frock, a black hat, and a musquash coat. Lavender and pink abutilons composed her posy. Before leaving on their wedding tour the brides changed into smart blue suits. Mrs F. Stowell wore a light navy blue and beige flecked tweed costume, worn with a honey-beige blouse and velour hat of same shade, and Mrs S. M. Brown chose a jumper of pervenche blue crepe, with her navy felt hat.
