RACING & TROTTING

On And Off The Track \ BUDGET OF NEWS AND VIEWS FIXTURES Racing: May 4, 6—Hawke’s Bay J.C. May 4, 6—Westland R.C. May 4, 6—Egmont J.C. May 6—Dunedin J.C. May 11— Amberley R.C. May 11, 13—Nelson J.C. May 16, 18—Wanganui J.C. May 17, 18—Marlborough R..C. May 17, 18—Southland R.C. May 18— Ashburton County R.C. May 23, 25—Te Kuiti R.C. May 25 —South Canterbury J.C. Trotting: May 2, 4—Forbury Park T.C. May 4, 6 —Cambridge T.C. May 11—Oamaru T.C. May 11, 13—Waikato T.C. May 16 —Marlborough T.C. June 1, 3—Canterbury Park T.C. The first race at Forbury to-day is to start at 11.45. The Birchwood Hunt meeting resulted in a profit of £147. Indianapolis has won £3190, in adlition to two gold cups, this season. There will be two place totalisatovs at Forbury to-day, one paying 75-25, and the other three equal dividends. Official sanction is announced for the postponed Methven meeting to be held on Monday next. Only seven horses have been nominated for the Southland Cup, and three of these have been entered for the Tradesmen’s Handicap. Excitement, sire of Australia’s champion two-year-old filly Bimilla, is by Hurry On, sire of Hunting Song and Lord Warden. Unseen is suited by winter going, and he should start favourite for the Farewell Handicap at the Dunedin Jubilee fixture. The totalisator at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s four race meetings this season handled £272,339, as compared with £267,161 10s last season, and £204,941 in 1932-33. Knock Out gave 141 b. and a beating to Sunee at Awapuni last month, and if she would reproduce that form she would be hard to beat in the seven furlong race at Dunedin on Monday.

Black Duke's 11.11 in the May Hurdles is only 41b. more than he carried to victory at the Dunedin Cup meeting, but the old fellow has had a "leg” since then and may be short of a race.

Instability cost Princess Onyx first place in the New South Wales Trotting Derby. She shied at the start and lost nearly a hundred yards, and finished only a length behind the winner.

Although Mr E. E. D. Clarke dispersed his Melton Stud, he has no intention of dropping out of racing. He has eight horses in J. Scobie’s stable, and will be a buyer when more are required.

While the mile and a quarter races at Invercargill show a falling off in entries, this is counterbalanced by an increase in the nominations for the open sprint events, which are well above the average of the last year or two.

Last season the Aucklander F. J. Smith established a record by training over 50 winners. That is unlikely to be beaten this year, but F. C. Dunlevey has a chance of going close to it, as to date he has turned out 30 winners, and there are three months yet to go.

Whipknot, who gave himself a knock in the Great Western Steeplechase, has made a good recovery, and, all going well in the meantime, will be a starter in the Celebration Steeplechase at Wingatui. Some of the other horses which fell at Riverton are not included in current lists of entries. Master Brierly must have been pretty highly tried in private for the A.J.C. meeting. He is in the same stable as Peter Pan, Australia’s best stayer, and this horse was started in the mile race on the day Master Brierly won the Cumberland Plate, and was withdrawn from the A.J.C. Plate, which Master Brierly also won. “I used to be proud of the Riverton Steeplechase course,’ said an owner whose horses have won the Great Western Steeplechase on more than one occasion, “but nowadays it is a very poor test for jumpers. I walked round the course with a foot rule prior to the recent meeting, and was amazed to find how ridiculously low the fences had been cut.” (Dunedin "Star”). Kilbroney, who died in 1932, was 23 years old when he sired the Auckr land St. Leger winner Kelly. Thd stock of the Irish-bred stallion have won stakes totalling approximately £226,000, and Kilbroney mares are frequently producing winners or producers of winners. Probably the best horse sired by Kilbroney was Kilboy, who won the A.J.C. Derby, and was considered a certainty for the Melbourne Cup when he went amiss, leaving the stable’s second string Sasanof to capture the big race. Kilboy returned to New Zealand and won the Great Autumn with 8.10 on a light preparation, the highest weight carried by a three-year-old winner of the race except Merrie England, who carried 9.1 back in 1890, but took 2.391 to run the distance. Kilbroney was essentially a sire of stamina, and his influence on New Zealand bloodstock is likely to be apparent for some time to come.

Mr Gaine Carrington, whose death occurred at Gisborne last week, was responsible for the importation of a number of horses. Polydamon provided many winners in various parts of the Dominion, while the progeny of Hunting Song have raced with success in New Zealand and Australia. Not only was Mr Carrington’s stud widely known, but his personality was appreciated by sportsmen, particularly by those in New Zealand who knew him best. He was connected with bloodstock breeding from his early days. Born in Taranaki 66 years ago, Mr Carrington went to the Gisborne district in his youth, and spent much time in breaking-in horses. Among those which he owned were Swordfish, Crackshot, Sarasen, Gazeley (imported), Multifid, Polydamon (imoortedi. Cynic (bought from Sir James Carroll), Colossus (imported), Hunting Song (imported), and Defoe (imported). Mr Carrington’s name will be kept green by Gaine Carrington, a Hunting Song horse named after him which won the Caulfield Cup and other good races in New Zealand and Australia.

The last crop of foals by Balboa is due to appear next spring, the Marco horse having done a good season before his death a few months ago. His name is likely to be kept green for some time, as his stock usually take time to mature and last well in training. “Prospects” for Forbury to-day:— Bayfield Handicap—Air Flow, Journey’s End, Renegade. DOUBLE TO ROYAL GALLANT By Telegraph—Press Association REEFTON, May 1. For the Reefton Jockey Club’s autumn meeting the weather was wet and boisterous and the course heavy. The totalisator investments were £3791/10/against £4833/10/- last year, a decrease of £862. Results:—
