WAIMATE

SHOOTING SEASON OPENS GOOD BAGS REPORTED In various parts of the district the opening of the shooting season yesterday saw a large number of guns at the various vantage points, and although In some instances results -were slightly disappointing, many excellent bags of game were secured. Reports to hand show that at Hook Messrs C. C. Douglas and H. B. L. Johnstone secured a satisfactory bag, while at Williowbridge early in the morning the bag of Mr R. Forsyth comprised nine nice birds. At Lake Wainono many limit bags of swan are officially reported, while on the Waitaki River, although ducks are said to be gun shy, most of the sportsmen are reported to have had excellent sport. Last evening the weather was overcast and every indication pointed to good shooting conditions throughout the Waimate district.

PARISHIONER’S MEETING The annual meeting of the parishioners of St. Augustine’s Church, Waimate, was held in the Sunday School on Tuesday night, the vicar (Rev. A. H. McC. Acheson) being in the chair. The annual report recorded a year of progress, especially in the Sunday School and Bible Class departments. There was a larger roll number than for some years. The attendance at the services had been well maintained, though sickness had accounted for smaller congregations occasionally. Some experiments had been made. Instead of having Holy Communion on third Sundays at noon, it was held at 9.30. The change seemed to meet a need, and probably will be continued during the winter. On fourth Sunday evenings the service is specially for youth. Services had been held at Hook, Hannaton and Makikihi, congregations being in evidence at the first two places. At Makikihi the attendances were disappointing and the question of closing the services was being considered. The work of the parish organisations had been marked with vigour and life. In conclusion Mr Acheson stated that the year had been for him a time of fitting into the community and parish life. He hoped the coming year would be one of advance in all directions, especially as regards putting the finances on a sound basis and the rousing of further interest in the outlying districts. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance brought forward from the previous year of £94/18/8. The main receipts during the year were: Offertories and envelopes £279/11/5, special offertories £BS/3/-, subscriptions £173/7/-, special receipts £219/5/10. Expenditure included salaries and wages £366/5/10, lighting and heating £29/10/4, sundry charges £96/10/-, special charges £9l/16/5. The year’s work left a credit balance of £IOB/2/8, but outstanding accounts and liabilities would reduce this to £6l. It was decided that the Parish Council should consist of the sidesmen elected at the annual meeting and one representative from each parish organisation. The following officers were elected: Mr C. C. Douglas (Vicar’s Warden), Mr L. C. Hobbs (Parishioners’ Warden), Messrs D. S. Chisholm, A. Colville, T. T. Eade, W. J. Fletcher, d’A. S. Grut, J. M. King, H. E. Mewburn, J. C. Templer, Dr. A. G. Pitts, Capt. N. A. Rattray (Vestry), Mr T. E. Parry (auditor). Messrs Depree, Griffiths, Kirby and Lash (sidesmen). A comprehensive vote of thanks was passed to all who had helped with the work of the church during the year.
