The many friends of Archdeacon Godfrey in Christchurch and South Canterbury will regret to learn thai;, owing to very serious eye trouble, he has been obliged to tender his res gnation to the Bishop of Melanesia. Mr Godfrey is an old Christchurch boy, and on joining the Melanesian Mission in 1918 was stationed at Raga, New Hebrides. Later he was appointed warden of St. Paul’s Training College for native teachers and ordinands at Lolowai, and two years ago he was made Archdeacon of Southern Melanesia, which comprises the New Hebrides, Banks, Reefs and Torres Islands. An instance of the strong pride of race which is inherent in the Scottish people was given by Mr C. S. Thomas in his address to the Christchurch Businessmen’s Club on Tuesday. After referring to the grandeur of the Scottish national war memorial, he described how an elderly woman, bent and supporting herself by means of a stick, was assisted across the building to the Cameramans’ roll of honour. When the woman’s daughter suddenly pointed to a name in the pages of the national scroll the old woman steadily drew herself erect with pride, and without a word walked unsupported from the building. Outside, she remained as straight as any woman thirty years her junior, as she mingled with the crowd.
