POORER QUALITY OF BUTTER
AUSTRALIAN’S STRONG CRITICISM DEMAND FOR IMMEDIATE ACTION United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received April 30, 9.20 p.m.) CANBERRA, April 30. The Federal Ministry is gravely perturbed at the failure of the Australian dairying industry to improve the standard of export butter. The Acting-Prime Minister (Dr. Earle Page) declared that the quality was now lower than several years ago. Danish butter was selling in Britain at 1/3 per lb, and Australian was selling at only lOd. He emphasised that improvement in quality and price would add immediately to the income of the Australian dairying industry, and would also strengthen' the oversea trade balance. Dr. Page anticipates that when the export control arrangements are being revised at the beginning of August, the Commonwealth Government will have difficulty in standing up to foreign competitors unless the quality of Australian supplies of export butter is considerably improved in the meantime. The official reason given for the poor average quality of Australian butter is the dirty and inefficient method of manufacture.
