The Gabriella is due here on Saturday and should proceed south after discharge the same evening. To Replace the Gale Advice has been received that the Canterbury Steam Shipping Company has ordered a new motor vessel to replace its steamer Gale, which was sold recently to Australian buyers.‘The new vessel will be very similar to the company’s new 600 ton motor coaster Breeze, which since she entered the coastal trade last year has proved very successful. The new ship will be propelled by a British Polar Diesel engine of 725 b.h.p., similar to that of the Breeze, which has been ordered from British Auxiliaries Limited. Until the new vessel is ready for service the Canterbury Company has chartered the Anchor Company’s Orepuki to replace the Gale. The Orepuki is now running under charter to the Union Company, and will be transferred to the Canterbury Company on Saturday. She is due to call at Timaru on May 8. New Union Vessel It was recently announced that the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand was calling tenders for a new vessel specially designed for the carriage of fresh fruits for the Auckland-Flji-Tonga-Samoa trade. The company has now placed a contract for the vessel with the well-known builders, Messrs Hawthorn, Leslie, of Newcastle-on-Tyne, and delivery is to be given in about 12 months’ time. The dimensions of the vessel will be 351 ft by 50ft by 27ft, giving a gross tonnage of approximately 3,900. Propulsion will be by two-cycle Armstrong Sulzer Diesel engines, to give 165 knots speed on loaded draught. Modern accommodation will be provided for 40 passengers, permitting of island tours under the most comfortable conditions. Mataroa At Auckland The Shaw, Savill and Albion liner Mataroa, arrived at Auckland last Thursday from London and Southampton. The vessel brought passengers and mail for New Zealand and cargo for discharge at Auckland and Wellington.
