W.E.A.

MONTHLY MEETING Mr E. W. Jones presided over a fair attendance of delegates at the monthly meeting of the Workers' Educational Association. Correspondence was received from Professor James Shelley stating that he was unable to come to Timaru to open the session on May 29, as the date was inconvenient. Mr Geo. Manning, Christchurch, wrote inviting local students and friends to participate in the annual four day excursion to Mount Cook at the King’s Birthday week end. The election of a president, owing to the retirement of Mr R. Stewart, resulted in the return of Mr E. W. Jones. Mr Jones thanked members for the honour they had done him, and said he would endeavour to live up to the high standard set by his predecessors. It was decided to hold the opening night of the session in the W.E.A. hall as the Little Playhouse was unavailable. Attention was dfawn to the draughty state of the room, and it was agreed to have it in a comfortable state for the commencement of the classes. The secretary reported that during the month two members of the public speaking and debating class, Messrs Wheeler and Odell, met in debate two members of the Catholic Debating Club, Messrs Daly and Durning, at a function organised by the latter club. The subject was “That the general introduction of machinery has been more harmful than beneficial to mankind.’’ After an excellent debate, Mr A. E. Lawrence, editor of “The Timaru Herald,” who was judge, awarded the decision to the Catholic Club who took the affirmative. The committee congratulated the W.E.A. members on their efforts.
