ENGLISH ORPHANS

SETTLEMENT IN AUSTRALIA By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, April 29. A former Premier of Victoria, Sir Stanley Argyle, is a passenger by the Niagara, en route to the Empire Parliamentary Union’s gathering in London. In discussing immigration, he said the community settlement schemes in Western Australia had been a' failure, but child immigration had been successful. When Premier he went to Western Australia to study child immigration, and was so impressed that he committed the Victorian Government to a somewhat similar scheme. City-bred orphan children, after a year in Australia, developed healthy complexions and began to grow healthy and strong. They readily adopted Australian customs, as they were brought out too young to have developed a real hankering after the Mother Country. The scheme being prepared In Victoria would be supported by the Federal and State Governments, and by the Lady Northcote Trust, which had a fund of £200,000 for the settlement of English orphan children.
