ATHLETICS

NEW SUB-CENTRE MEETS OFFICERS ELECTED The inaugural meeting of the recently formed South Canterbury Sub-Centre of the Canterbury Amateur Athletic Centre was held last night, Mr E. D. Mcßae presiding. Mr Mcßae explained that at a meeting of delegates of athletic clubs held on March 30 it had been decided to form a sub-centre of the Canterbury Amateur Athletic Association. A letter had been sent to the Canterbury Centre acquainting it of the proposal and asking its authority to go on with it. So far no reply had been received. Mr C. W. Cameron said that -while no official reply had been received it had been reported that the Canterbury Centre had approved the step. Mr Mcßae said that the formation of a sub-centre would be most beneficial to clubs in South Canterbury in that they would be able to control their own sport. Clubs would have a sub-centre to whom they could turn for assistance when they required it, which they had not always received from the Canterbury Centre. Mr Mcßae said it should be made clear, however, that they were not leaving the Centre under any sense of grievance. “We know they have been lax in looking after our affairs, and I think they know it, too; but we are over 100 miles away and they have their own troubles there to look after. I think the Canterbury Centre will be pleased that we are forming a subcentre and I think the relations between the two bodies will be most amicable —they certainly should be,” he said.

Mr Cameron reported that Waimate whole-heartedly approved the proposal and had 'appointed Messrs Murray Grant, A. Harper and the speaker to represent them. Mr J. Ritchie said the Temuka Club would support the sub-centre and considered the move a step in the right direction. Mr Cameron explained that at present the control of athletics in South Canterbury was vested in one club, which was a state of affairs which should not go on indefinitely. That was what was behind the proposal. Mr E. C. J. Foot reported that a body of athletes in the Albury district was anxious to affiliate with the proposed sub-centre. Election of Officers The following officers were elected: Patron, Mr C. R. Orr Walker, S.M.; president, Mr E. D. Mcßae; vice-presi-dents, Messrs J. Ritchie, L. J. Collins, C. W. Cameron; secretary, Mr M. Grant; treasurer, Mr R. Needham; auditor, Mr F. J. Cook. It was decided to instruct clubs to hold their annual meetings before September 30, and to appoint three delegates to the annual meeting of the sub-centre to be held not later than October 15. It was agreed to instruct the Harrier Management Sub-Committee to register all harriers, registration to be effective to September 30, and the fee to be 2/6. The secretary was instructed to apply to the Canterbury Centre for a block of numbers for harrier registration purposes. On the motion of Mr Foot it was decided to give the Harrier Subcommittee complete control of its own finances, with the exception that affiliation fees and 1/- of each registration fee be handed to the SubCentre. The following sub-committee was appointed to draw up a constitution; Messrs Mcßae, Cameron, Foot, N, W. Mulvey and A. Harper.
