TIMARU HARBOUR ELECTION
To the Editor of “ The Timaru Herald " Sir —Many ratepayers will have read with regret that Mr Dawson has decided not to again offer his services on the 4Fimaru Harbour Board. One is not surprised at this decision, in fact in face of the criticism of our public men through the press, the wonder is that of them do offer their services, and it is quite easy to understand how hard it is to get any of our “worth while" citizens to take office on public bodies. The thanks of the ratepayers are due to Mr Dawson for his services while chairman of the Board. He is a proved successful business man, and he brought the same cautious business ability to bear on harbour matters as he did in his own business. I may say that I have never spoken to Mr Dawson, but I and many othei’s realise the seriousness of the loss the ratepayers will suffer in losing Mr Dawson’s services. In view of the clash of opinions on harbour mattei-s, it seems only fair to ask all candidates for office to address meetings of ratepayers, so that we may see just what their views are. There seem to be two main opinions as to what should be done with the harbour, and these should be fully explained to the ratepayers so that they may vote intelligently,—l am, etc., RATEPAYER. Timaru, April 27.
