An Unusual Figurehead An old figurehead of unknown origin recently on view at Berkeley Square, London, appears to represent a saint or monarch and is carved from the jawbone of what must have been an enormous whale. It measures 36in in height, 16in in base diameter, and 40in in base circumference. Experts date it from the sixteenth century, although it may be even older, and it is known to have been brought from either Norway or Sweden about thirty years ago, according to a well-known London shipping magazine. The previous owner recalls having been told that it was the figurehead of an old whaling vessel, and the probability is that it was earved by a sailor during an Arctic voyage. The carving has been extremely well done, in view of the hardness of the material, and there are distinct signs of chafing by ropes. Both hands are pierced, as if at one time the figure held a sceptre or similar object.
