AUSTRALIANS IN ROME United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright ROME, April 22. The Australian Davis Cup players, J. H. Crawford and V. B. McGrath had to put up a long, tense struggle to reach the semi-final in the Italian tennis championships. They were a long way from their true form with the result that C. Boussus and Destromau (France) once looked like snatching victory over the normally far-superior pair, as they led the Australians 5-1 in the fourth set.

A. K. Quist’s and D. P. Turnbull’s game in the doubles was postponed as Caska, one of their opponents, had strained a muscle. Hopman and. Mdlle. Jedrzejowska beat A. K. Quist and Mdlle. Payot 7- 6-2. R. A. Menzel and Mrs Sperling beat Hines and Miss E. Ryan, 6-3, 6-4. | Men’s Singles Quarter-Finals. R. A. Menzel beat G. P. Hughes, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2. Palmiard beat Cuska, 2-6, 5-7, 6-2, 6- 7-5. Women’s Singles Semi-Final. Mrs Sperling beat Mdlle Jedrzejowska, 6-1, 6-4.
