Within 24 hours of renting out private garage space for the storage of a motor-car owners or lessees of the building are required by law in California to make a report to the police. The enactment arose from the fact that in many instances stolen cars are found hidden out in private garages innocently rented to thieves. The garage, and the make, number and license number of the car have to be supplied. Failure to make a report may entail a fine up to 500 dollars, or imprisonment up to six months, or both.
