SWIMMING

WEST END CLUB The West End Swimming Club held its fortnightly meeting in the Pavilion on Wednesday evening. Mr T. R. Elder presided over the following members: Messrs G. Collins, J. Gillon, D. Stewart, J. T. Dennison, A. Ball, D. Elder, J. Drummond, E. Ramsay. The Herbert Smith Trustees forwarded miniature cups, and three bronze medallions for the winners of the junior championships and the hon. secretary was instructed to acknowledge the gifts with a letter of thanks. The application from the West End Ladies’ Hockey Club for the use of the Swimming club’s portion of the pavilion was granted. The following remit was approved for consideration at the Annual General Meeting: “That no associate member of the Club, who has taken part in carnivals as a member of another Club, shall be allowed to compete in West End Club championships or cup events.” The remit was moved by Mr Macgregor and seconded by Mr D. Elder. Mr Ramsay was accorded a vote of thanks for his offer to repair the club locker. *> 1 Although the swimming season had closed, it was decided to continue with meetings of the committee. Social Evening A successful social function was held in the West End Pavilion on Thursday, where the Swimming Club held an evening party. Mr H. C. Romans presided over the gathering which was attended by over 100 members of the club and supporters. The chairman congratulated the club officials on having had a very successful season. Games and dancing interspersed with a few musical items, contributed largely to the success of the function. The accompaniste was Mrs A. Ball and community singing added to the enjoyment of the function. An accordion solo by Mr L. Andrews was well received, also recitations by Miss B. Wotherspoon and Master Bruce Ball. The presentation of prizes and cups won by members of the Club was made by the chairman, as follows: West End Ratepayers Challenge Cup, L. W. Macgregor; J. E. Chiles Challenge Cup, H. Pateman; Elder Junior Cup, Miss H. Donaldson; runner-up, Miss O. Wilson; Mayo Diving trophy, P. Bridges; senior champion, L. Hunt; senior lady champion, Miss Mollie Akins; intermediate lady champion, Miss B. Wotherspoon; intermediate champion; R. King; junior girl champion, Miss O. Wilson; runner-up, Miss H. Donaldson; junior boy champion, S. I. Mulholland; runner-up, S. Watson; 25yds learners breast-stroke, Miss A. Dennison; run-ner-up, Miss D. Ball; in the junior section the winner received a miniature cup presented by the Herbert Smith Trust and the runner-up a bronze medallion also from the Herbert Smith Trust; senior aggregate, Miss R. Gillon; intermediate aggregate, R. King and D. Parsons equal; junior girls aggregate, Miss D. Ball and Miss A. Dennison equal; junior boys aggregate, J. Drummond. The cups for the junior aggregate were provided by Mr J. T. Dennison. The miniature cup for the senior lady champion was given by Mrs Macgregor, Miss V. Campbell donating a trophy for the runnerup in the Elder junior cup events. After supper provided by the Ladies’ Committee had been served, a hearty vote of thanks was passed to the committee on the call of the chairman. Mr T. R. Elder proposed a vote of thanks to Mr Romans for his services as chairman, the motion being carried to the accompaniment of cheers. Votes of thanks were passed to Mrs Ball for providing the music and to the artists.
