WINCHESTER

ANNUAL PICNIC OF SCHOOL ENJOYABLE OUTING The annual picnic of the Winchester School was held in the school grounds on Saturday. There was a large attendance of parents, friends and children present, and a most enjoyable day was spent. Mr T. H. Langford, chairman of the school committee, extended a welcome to all assembled, and hoped they would enjoy themselves He was pleased to see Mrs J. L. White and family, and Mr and Mrs G. Burborough present. As this was the first public function in connection with the school since the arrival of the new schoolmaster, Mr H. Oldham, he had much pleasure in extending a welcome to Mr and Mrs Oldham, and hoped they. would have a happy time In their new school. On behalf of the visitors and parents Mr Leslie Talbot returned thanks to the chairman and committee for the enjoyable outing. Mr Oldham also returned thanks. During the afternoon sports for the adults and children were held under the supervision of the staff and committee. Results were: — Boys A series of 5 events (flat race, sack race, potato and spoon, wheelbarrow and “Simon Says”) for the boys in various sections; 5 points for Ist, 3 for 2nd, and 1 for 3rd. Mr and Mrs Sydney Smith, Ina Marina, Blenheim, will be the guests of Mr and Mrs H. Oldham, Schoolhouse, Winchester, for the local show. Mrs M, Haywood, Waimate, is spending a holiday with Mrs D, A. Pearce, Winchester. Mrs M. Day, who has been the guest of Mrs C. J. L. Mcßratney, has returned to Christchurch. Misses M. and A. Early, Christchurch, are the guests of Mrs G. V. Gudsell, Winchester. Mr L.' H. Orbell, Winchester, has returned from a visit to Invercargill. SUCCESSFUL DANCE There was a good attendance at the first of a series of dances held under the auspices of the social committee of the Victoria Hall. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mrs W. J. Jackson and Mr C. Louden. Mr W. J. Jackson was master of ceremonies.
