Leaking badly in all holds, the Japanese freighter Portland Maru, fully loaded with a cargo of wheat for the East, was beached half a mile from shore, on a short, treacherous stretch of shingle off Cape Torrens. She had been in danger of foundering after battling against heavy seas.
