THAMES IN FLOOD

MENACE TO LIVES OF RIVERSIDE DWELLERS United Press Association— By Electric Tel egraph —Copyright (Received February 7, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, February 6. The Thames is higher than it has been since the floods of January, 1928. The water at Victoria Embankment is four feet above normal high water. The Somerset House vaults are flooded and the underground railway from Westminster to Blackfriars was only saved by a special gang of pumpers, who were called up. For 100 miles along the Thames officials are anxiously watching the rising tides, which are due to a northeast gale from Norway. Many basements in riverside houses are already flooded, and the police are preparing to warn the affected areas if there is the least danger of a recurrence of the disasters in 1928, when whole families were surprised and drowned in their beds.
