LORD GALWAY ENTERTAINED United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received February 7, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, February 6. Presiding at a dinner given by the New Zealand Society, Sir James Parr (High Commissioner for New Zealand) toasted Viscount Galway, GovernorGeneral designate of New Zealand, who was the chief guest at the dinner. Sir James recalled that Viscount Galway’s ancestors had served in the House of Commons continuously from 1727 to 1802, and from 1847 to 1885. Viscount Galway, in responding, suggested that one way to alleviate the farmers’ difficulties would be to counteract the women’s slimming fashion by persuading them to. eat more. He described his recent tour of the battlefields of France, from which he brought striking tributes to the gallantry and devotion of the New Zealand troops, including especially a moving testimony made by the Dean of the Chapter, of Amiens Cathedral.

Lord Hewart (Lord Chief Justice) in referring to his marriage to Miss Stewart, of Wanganui, claimed himself as a New Zealander by adoption. His telegraphic address was now “Wanganui, London.” He had accepted Viscount Galway’s invitation to go to New Zealand next year, Mr J. H. Thomas (Secretary for the Dominions) in a humorous speech, said that it was humbug for Lord Hewart to declare that Viscount Galway had invited him to go to New Zealand, when in fact a visit to New Zealand was a condition of his marriage. Several speakers paid tribute to Lord Rutherford as New Zealand’s greatest son.

The guests at the dinner included Earl Jellicoe, Lord Rutherford, Earl of Liverpool, Admii-al Sir Earle Chatfield, Rear-Admiral Geoffrey Blake, Captain E. R. Drummond, the new Commander of the New Zealand Division, General Sir Archibald Montgomery-Massing-berd, Major-General B. C. Freybei’g, V.C., Sir David Chadwick, Sir Frank Smith, and the Bishop of London.
