WAIMATE

meeting of hospital COMMITTEE FINANCIAL POSITION The monthly meeting of the Waimate Hospital Committee was held on Wednesday night. Present: Messrs J. I. Hayman (chairman), H. J. Dash, G. J. Shackleton, J. Dempsey, and J. T. Hay. The chairman of the Finance Committee (Mr H. J. Dash), tabled the following statement of receipts and expenditure covering the 12 months ended January 31, 1935: General maintenance payments, £5696 9s 9d (estimate £5547); receipts, £1391 9s Id (estimate, £1291). The chairman reported that receipts since last meeting were £133 9s 3d, and accounts presented for payment that day amounted to £509. The return of patients showed that at the date of last report 34 patients were under treatment. During the month 84 patients had been admitted, and 74 discharged, leaving 44 patients still in hospital. The average number of occupied beds was 41.2. Superintendent's Report Reporting on behalf of Dr. R. G. Shackleton, Dr. T. W. Wylie said that since Boxing Day, owing to the annual holidays, the service at the hospital had been maintained by a staff of two, and work had been lather busier than usual in consequence. Six nurses had been affected in an exchange of staff with Timaru, and it nad teen agreed between the matrons at Timaru and Waimate that these exchanges should take place between January and June. Matron Lindsay, of Timaru. had suggested that cookery classes should be arranged so that nurses could complete this course in their second year. Matron Farquhar, Waimate, had unfortunately been on the sick list and was likely to be off duty for a further fortnight. Alterations were suggested in the house telephone system to facilitate communication on the hospital premises. The chairman said that after inspection he had come to the conclusion that the telephone facilities were really necessary, especially in cases such as at present when the matron was ill.

The report was adopted and Dr. Wylie was appointed superintendent for the ensuing term.

General

Mr H. J. Dash was appointed to represent the committee at the ceremony of the Bestowal of the Rushlight to be carried out at the rooms of the Waimate Group of Toe H, on February 23.

Arising out of a discussion at the previous meeting, the chairman reported that he had been interviewed by a Government tenant, who appeared to have been under the impression that he was entitled to occupy or sublet the whole of the riverbed portion of the property. After the speaker had pointed out the actual position to the man in question, who was getting on in years, Mr Hayman said that he had intimated that grubbing required to be done on the property which the committee would probably have to pay for. There was a well which supplied water to the man he had spoken to, but if the committee’s rights were not prejudiced, it might be as well to hold over further discussion in the meantime. This course was agreed to. STUDHOLME SALE There was a fairly large yarding both of fat sheep and store sheep at the Studholme saleyards on Wednesday.
